Dealing With A Nosy Neighbour

At one time or another, many people have had to deal with the irritation of nosy neighbours. While most of the time it's a harmless annoyance, it's still important to let any peeping neighbour know that your life is your own business. While marching up to them and accusing may not be a great method, after all you will have to continue to live next to these people and making them hostile will not help, there are some simple solutions that can help curb the invasion of privacy.
One of the most direct and simple means of deterring a nosy neighbour is simply by being direct and friendly about their curiosity. When you see them watching you, smile and wave. If you are working in your backyard or lawn and notice someone staring across from the next yard, engage them in a conversation. Many times nosy neighbours may just be lonely or bored, or simply curious and do not mean any harm. By being pleasant and talking with them, their curiosity might be sated enough to stop watching your every move.
You can also ask to borrow things if you notice them outside watching you at lawn work or play. If you frequently make requests to borrow sugar or hedge clippers, these neighbours may actually start avoiding you in hopes they won't have to loan you yet another item.
Another easy method is to simply ignore them and go about your daily life as if they weren't there watching. While this may be impossible for some people, others don't find it too hard to do. The nosy neighbour may eventually become bored with watching you go to work, walk the dog, pick up the mail and other mundane activities. By giving them nothing but the most boring details to gossip about, they very well may turn their attentions to more interesting people and things to observe.
Moving activities where the neighbours can't see is another way to cut back on prying eyes. By building a fence in the backyard or planting tall hedges, you won't have to worry as much about what the nosy neighbour might be seeing; all they'll be able to see is the fence or the shrubbery! Also keep your private conversations indoors rather than in the yard. Don't speak on your cell phone outside where neighbours may be able to eavesdrop.
Installing blinds in your home will stop neighbours from being able to look directly through your windows when the curtains have been drawn back. Blinds, even when drawn closed, will still allow fresh air from an open window, and you can adjust them to let in any mount of light you want while still keeping your indoor activities private.
Be sure to lock your mailbox, doors and garage to prevent neighbours from snooping. Remember, while peeking over at your house or yard isn't a crime, trespassing through private property and belongings is and should you catch a snooping neighbour doing the latter, call the authorities.
