While you may think that voice training is just for politicians and actors, today, people in business are becoming much more aware of its value. Courses are offered by means of books, CDs, and even video, as well as workshops and private consultations.
Originally, recording the speaking voice was done primarily for private use or for the telephone answering machine and was not readily available for the entire world to hear unless your business actually dealt with the recorded voice or you were a public figure. In the past decade alone, however, webinars, youtube, video conferencing, and social media have brought the issue of the speaking voice to the forefront, because now everyone can hear you and possibly see you as well.
Your voice speaks volumes about you. What is yours saying?
In addition to finding your ‘real’ or true voice, a good voice training program will show you how to:
1. increase your volume without shouting;
2. improve your diction no matter which language you are speaking;
3. have total control over what comes out of your mouth, whether you are in conversation with your colleagues, talking to that special person in a club, or addressing an audience;
4. eliminate vocal abuse; and,
5. control your nervousness in public speaking.
There is no doubt that voice training has many more benefits than what I just listed. In your search for the right program, however, it is important to look for an approach that will show you the voice you don’t know you have. Many programs will work on the voice you hear on your answering machine. The better programs are the ones that work on the voice that is inside of you, just waiting to come out.
Therefore, in your search, make sure that the program teaches you 1st how to breathe with the support of your diaphragm. If this is not part of the package, then do not waste your time or your money. Your ‘real’ voice will be deeper in pitch, resonant, and warmer in quality than your habitual one which can only happen when you use your chest cavity as your primary sounding board. And, that condition will only occur when you learn to breathe properly.
While I cannot list all the many wonderful benefits that voice training will afford you, the increase in your confidence will be obvious, especially when you hear your ‘real’ voice on your answering machine.
