Offering Pizza Delivery? Consider These Tips

One of the first things you will need is a good delivery driver or two. You cannot just hire any guy who can drive. You need someone who will represent your company well. Remember, when people order delivery, the only thing they will see about your company is the person who comes to their door to deliver the pizzas.

Look for someone who has a good attitude and will make a great first impression. A smile and a clean-cut appearance are important; as they will only spend a few seconds on the doorstep of the homes they are visiting. Then, look for someone with a clean driving record. Finally, if the individual will be using his or her own car, look for a driver who is insured.

That brings us to a second consideration. You will want to make sure that there is adequate auto insurance to protect your company if there is a serious crash involving your delivery driver. Your driver's policy may not be sufficient, so you may need to take out a non-owned automobile policy, or you may need to consider offering a company car for your drivers to use.

Next, consider the way you will compensate your driver. You will need to pay them, as well as give them compensation for gas. However, because the driver will make tips, it is customary in most areas to pay about a dollar less than minimum wage. To protect yourself, pay the standard mileage rate issued by the IRS to your drivers to compensate for gas, or give them a flat per delivery rate.

So how are you going to make up these additional costs? One way is through charging a delivery charge. A few cents to a few dollars per pizza you send out on delivery will easily cover the additional amount you will pay your drivers for gas.

Before you start offering delivery, make sure you decide on your delivery area. You do not want to deliver more than 30 miles away from your pizzeria, because your drivers will have a hard time making good money, and you will have a hard time keeping each pizza hot and fresh while it is en route to the customer's home.

Finally, if you are serious about offering pizza delivery, you will need to set up your POS so that it can handle the job. Make sure that your drivers carry change for customers who need it, and create a system to monitor that change. Leave instructions for your workers to use when taking delivery orders, such as repeating the total bill several times or asking the individual to leave on a porch light.
