Gluten is a substance that when flour is made moist give it the elasticity needed to mould it into shapes like loaves of bread, donuts and of course pie crusts.
To make gluten free pie crusts you need just 3 basic ingredients, rice flower, shortening and water. These 3 constituents will make a pie crust that is so similar to ordinary wheat flour pie crusts that people would have great difficulty in telling them apart. Using rice flour as a replacement for products that contain gluten to make pie crusts gives the dough a similar consistency, and the crusts that are baked taste fabulous. So there is no need to give up those pies if you find you have become gluten intolerant.

Becoming intolerant to gluten means a whole change of dietary lifestyle and there are certain foods that you should avoid so that you can remain healthy, but this does not result in you having to eat a bland tasteless for the rest of your life. If you do a lot of research on the internet and your local library you will find a wealth of information and recipes that will give your taste buds a treat and allow you to eat a lot of food that you thought not possible one of these is gluten free pie crusts.

To making these pie crusts is a very simple task, this is all you will need to do set your oven to 400 degrees and heat, and then take ½ a cup of the shortening and slice that finely into the rice flour of which there should be 1½ cups. Mix these together until a crumbly mixture forms, then add a measured 4 tablespoons of water and form the dough. The dough will need to be worked with the hands until you achieve a nice malleable texture that can easily be pressed into the pie crust base. When the base is in the dish use a fork to gently push holes into the mixture which prevents distortion in cooking, and place in the oven for around one quarter of an hour to cook. That is the routine for making simple gluten free pie crusts.
