Toddler and Girl Skirt Knitting Pattern - How to create a perfect fit skirt for your child

Skirts look great on toddlers and girls and they are fun to knit. I would like to show you how to create your own knitting pattern for girl skirt that will fit any one.

Here are steps to make your own knitting pattern for toddler and girl skirt.

Checking for the Yarn Gauge

1. Knit a 4x4 swatch to check for your yarn gauge. Write down the number of stitches per inch. Make sure that you take time and check your gauge carefully. This is the most important step.

2. Measure a child’s waist circumference. Write down the measurement.

Knitting the Waistband

3. With a circular knitting needle, cast on the total number of stitches that are equal to the waist circumference. For example, if your gauge value is 5 stitches per inch and your child’s waist measure 20 inches. You’ll need to cast on 100 stitches to make it 20 inches long.

4. Once you have all the cast on stitches, you can now join the cast on row and start knitting in round.

The Skirt Body

5. Make a waist band by knitting for 5 rows and purl 1 row.
6. Knit about 15-20 more rows for the first tier.

7. Increase all the stitches by making *yf, k1; repeat to the end. You can make a row of purl stitches prior and after the increase row to make it more noticeable. It’s totally up to you.
8. Knit another 25 more rows or as long as you want.

Now we can stop at this point for 2 tier-skirt. Or we can keep going for 3 tier-skirt by making another increasing row. Just make *yf, k1; repeat from * to the end of the row once more time. Then continue knitting until desired length. Then cast off all stitches.
The Edging

To finish the skirt off with a cute little edge, *crochet 5 chains, and sc into the 4th stitch; repeat form * to the end of the round.

If you don’t know how to crochet, you can do the following to finish off the edge;
Option 1: K1, *[insert the left hand needle into the stitch you just knitted and knit into it] 3 times, skip 3 stitches and knit into the 4th stitch; repeat from * to the end.

Option 2: Do 5-6 garter stitch rows by knit one row and purl one row alternately.

Cut off the yarn leaving 6 inches tail and weave it behind the stitches on the wrong side with a tapestry needle. Finish off the waist band by sewing an elastic band to it.

With these simple methods, you can knit a skirt that will fit your child perfectly. Further more, you can also incorporate many designed knitting patterns to your skirt such as lace and a cable patterns. I promise you, your girl will love her skirt and want to wear it again and again!
