Incorporating Elephant Ears Into Your Summer Garden

Adding various plants to your outdoor garden can be part of a wonderful landscape design. Elephant ears are a very popular plant that blends well with various foliage colors from other plants. These plants can be left outdoors year- round in planting zones 8 and higher. Elephant ears are perennials meaning that they will continue to provide your garden with beautiful colors and foliage year after year. They are best known for their large leaves that are heart-shaped and can reach up to three feet long.

Hostas are also wonderful shade type plants for an outdoor garden area. Many gardeners use these for landscaping around porches or decks. They have very colorful foliage and can produce beautiful blooms during the summer. When choosing the plants that you want to incorporate into your summer garden, you will need to determine your planting zone. Plant Delights Nursery, Inc. can help you to determine which specific planting zone you are in and which plants or blooming perennials are best for your area.

If you want to incorporate elephant ears into your landscaping, you will need to grow them in soil that is only slightly acidic. They are an excellent choice for soggy or wet areas because of their thirst for water. You can plant them very near water features, but keep in mind that they do not particularly thrive well in colder climates. If you are planning to display them year after year in northern areas it may be necessary to uproot them and replant them each spring.

Elephant ears like fertilizer that is high in nitrogen and will give your summer garden a very tropical look.
