Six Important Thoughts On Writing Skills

Often writing is a difficult task to do and while writing people got confused what to write. The things which are easier to say become difficult and sometimes complicated to write. Many people find it hard to express themselves through writing. In going from speaking to writing, a person appears to have been transformed. During speaking he is brief and to the point; in writing he becomes stuffy and starts using high-flown words and twisted sentences and the result either bore or confuse his readers.

The problem of clear simple communication is so wide spread one might conclude that only a specially gifted person can write clearly. This is not so- All you have to do is apply basic rules of good writing. Here are several important ones:-

Remember Your Readers:

What does the person who is going to read your material already know of your subject? An economist writing for colleagues could get away with,” Extrapolation of current data indicates that market forces should attain equilibrium at an annual sales rate of two million units”. For Layman, however Lie might better say,” Sales should stabilize at two million units a year”. It is equally important to determine what your audience wants to know. If your teacher, for example, wants you to write an essay on a visit to Museum, would you, in your essay, tell him that you traveled by bus, ate burger on your way, slept for a while etc? Not if you value your representation. The teacher wants your views on the Museum, not a travelogue. True he has to look at the initials but if it begins this way he may skip over vital points. Such writing remain forever half-read, still many half-understood because the writer was more interested in himself than the reader.

Decide What to Say:

The unskilled writer frequently thinks sentence by sentence. By the time he arrives at sentence 10, he discover that it should have followed sentence 3. The Remedy: List your major points before hand in the sequence that will make the most sense.

Be Brief And Simple:

Amateur writers too often equate length with significance; the longer the letter or article the weightier it seems. Stick to the essential thought and use simple words to explain it.

Avoid Repetition:

Say it once, not twice. Do not repeat yourself it is required for emphasis. Try not to convey the same thought through different words. It makes a bad impact on reader.

Avoid Roundabout Expression:

You can tighten a sentence by eliminating surplus words and sometimes by changing the verb from passive form to active. Instead of,” This is to notify you that your letter was received,” Why Not” “we received your letter”. An active verb, furthermore, usually carries more punch.

Stick To Familiar Words:

This does not mean you must renounce words of more than three syllables. However, do not use big words unless they sharpen your thought, for example, would ‘utilize’ in place of ‘use’ have helped your understanding.

We always marvel at the ease with which a skilled person in any field exercises his craft. Yet even the man with superb talent has to develop it through hard work. Writing is no different from other skills; You cant expect well-formed prose just to drop from your pen. Go over every thing at least once and test it against the rules. The odds are that you will find your writing coming to life.
