Drawing with ink

Along with pencil drawings, the ability to use pens and inks is probably one of the most portable ways of producing artwork almost anywhere. Not only is it a convenient way to produce stunning art pieces, but it is also an extremely affordable way to create impressive works. Choose the right art supplies to make sure you are able to create the best possible ink pieces.

Almost everyone has experience of using a pen, or ink, to doodle on the side of their paper, often while they are talking on the phone or trying to pay attention in a meeting. It is a medium that is very familiar and easy to get to grips with.

There are many types of pens available that can be used for creating ink drawings including fountain pens, drafting pens, graphic pens and split-nib dip pens. Even ballpoint pens can be used to create visually stunning pieces that will impress anyone who views them.

The type of pen you use will determine the type of line you are able to create, and it's not just thickness that is determined by the nib. The nib also controls ink flow.  As most ink drawings consist of only two colours – that of the ink and that of the paper - the artist will learn to use the empty space to complement his or her drawing. However, multi-coloured pieces are also possible and can be extremely effective.

Choose the right art materials to get the best from your creative talents.

Watercolours are lightweight allowing them to be carried around and used in a variety of places. Because they are so easy to use and clean up, they are great for using to do quick sketches or studies no matter where the location.  Still-life pictures and landscapes are popular subjects for people who prefer to use watercolours, but they can be used to paint just about anything.

The translucent quality of watercolours means that they are often used to convey emotive or ethereal effects. However, these same translucent qualities also mean that it can be hard to cover any mistakes made during the painting process.
