How Much Optical Zoom Do You Really Need?

We all want the biggest and the best things in life, be it cars or homes or cameras. But when you think about it, it would be a little boring to live in a 45-room castle in complete seclusion on a hill, not forgetting scary too. Even cameras pose the same problem; the largest numbers don't necessarily mean the best camera, including its optical zoom.
Now there are no hard and fast rules pertaining to the specifications of a camera in order to get a good picture. After a certain point, it's all about the photographer, not the camera. But yes, only after a certain point. Till then, you just need a better camera. As far as optical zoom is considered, it is generally a good practice to stick to the optical and not the digital zoom. A digital zoom is not the same as an optical zoom. Another thing to look out for along with good optical zoom is the focal length of the lens.

Knowing Zoom and Focal Length
The focal length (read as 'XX'mm) is the strength with which the lens can focus on an object, while the optical zoom (the number 'X'x zoom) is the strength of the total zoom you can achieve. This means that if a lens has a larger focal length, it has a narrow angle of view and a smaller focal length implies a wider angle of view. This means that if the camera you're buying says 35 mm focal length with a 10x optical zoom, this means the minimum distance of the lens is 35 mm and the maximum zoomed-in distance would be 350 mm. Now, a lens of 28 mm focal length and 10x zoom would mean the minimum distance is 28 mm and the maximum is only 280 mm, but the lens would give a much wider perspective than a 35 mm lens. This is why it is very important to know what kind of pictures you're going to take and then buy the appropriate camera, rather than getting the biggest one.

Deciding on the Best Optimum Zoom

To help you decide what optical zoom you want, here's a simple set of questions. The answers to them will reveal the kind of optical zoom you really want.

Do you want to use the camera to take photos of your family and friends, especially at birthdays or other parties?
You really don't need too much zoom here, only around 2x or 3x would be more than enough. In fact, if you're taking a picture of a large group, it would be better to have a wide angle camera. If you're trying to get detailed candid pictures in a party, you would again be better off to walk just a little closer than use a super-zoom camera with a narrow perspective that might distort the picture at the slightest movement.

Do you want to take pictures of nature while you're off on vacations or hiking in the woods?
Pictures of nature need you to be very still to eliminate the distortion, which means you'll have to stay a little back if it means getting a stable grip. If you're out hiking, a camera with a 5x or 7x optical zoom would be your best bet. It will get you the perfect still, without compromising on a larger perspective or on details.

Do you want to take pictures of subjects too far away and you can't really get too close, like wildlife photography of lions or birds?
You will need a great deal of optical zoom, at least 10x. If you're taking single subject pictures without much interest in the surroundings, then a narrow perspective camera with 10x or 15x optical zoom is excellent in getting the right kind of detail, like the lion's eyes or the eagle's beak.

Do you want to take more indoor shots or outdoor shots?
If you're taking more indoor shots, you will find a lack of space trying to step back, getting the right perspective. Again, a low zoom (2x to 5x), wide perspective camera would be excellent. If you're taking an outdoor shot, space won't be much of a bother and you'll also want to take pictures of things far away. This calls for a larger optical zoom (5x or more) and a decent perspective.

Are you going to take pictures in good light, or resort to a flash photo?
The answer kind of merges with the above situation of indoor photography. If you're outside in natural sunlight, a good zoom is not really necessary if the subject is close enough. If you're inside however, this means two things; poor lighting and the restrictions on flash. It is a little rude after all, to throw a flash into a person's face indoors in poor lighting. Here, you'll need a good enough zoom of around 10x to get close-ups without having bad lighting get in the way too much.

It becomes very important to know what you're buying when money is a bit of an issue. Buying a camera, somehow deviates from this statement, going as far ahead as to state that you won't always get the best thing even if you have the money, making buying it a little interesting!

How Not to Take Things Personally

Do you take things personally? Do you think that fingers are pointing at you all the time? If yes, then always remember that, there are three versions of every story; first is yours, second is someone else's and third is the reality. The best way to stop taking things personally would be by living in the reality.
We are the nucleus of our own lives. Taking things personally starts with the word 'I'. It's a mental state wherein a person is so 'self absorbed' or 'self centered' that he begins to take every antic and remark as offensive. The end result of this is that the person who takes things personally will end up hurting himself, feeling guilty and will feel like an outcast. If any of these things have happened to you, then you definitely take things personally and end up being upset or feeling incapable. But why should you feel upset or guilty? After all it's someone else's opinion. There are ways you can overcome this, let's see how...

It's Just an Opinion
Sometimes we take things personally assuming that an act or a statement was meant to target our ego or self respect. So, think twice as this could not be the reality. A person could have innocently said about something that he/she does not like. It does not mean that they are telling you something about yourself. It's merely an opinion, a generic opinion! And when you realize that you actually felt bad about something that was not said to you, then you know somewhere in your head you were guilty about something. Ask yourself this and get over it.

Know Yourself
Knowing yourself is as important as eating food. By knowing yourself I mean that you should be aware of the good and the bad in yourself. And moreover, you should accept yourself the way you are. If you are in a state of constant self denial or criticism, you will be more prone to taking things personally.

Reason out and Analyze
When someone has said or done something to you, that you feel has offended you in any way, then the first thing you do is, reason out 'why' that person said or did that with you. That person could have probably given you a wise advise that you took otherwise or another reason could be that the other person has some wrong perceptions about you. Once you get an answer to your 'why', you will no longer take it personally.

Maybe You Went Wrong Somewhere...

Someone could actually be pointing a finger at you, directly or indirectly. And at such times, you would feel bad, if someone tells you or reminds you that you are wrong. What you can do here is, ask yourself if what the other person is saying to you is right or wrong. If the answer comes that the other person was right, then there is no better bliss than 'realization'. Accept your mistakes and try improving on it. However, if the answer is that the person is wrong about you, than talk it out. Talk to that person about how you felt, know what his views are, clarify the misunderstandings.

Nobody is Perfect
Do you know anyone who is perfect? If your answer is yes, then my answer to you is that you don't know that person too well. This is in no offense to the person you think is perfect, but this is to tell you that 'perfection' – per se, does not exist. Everyone has flawed, sinned, and erred at some point in their lives. This is because no one learns without making mistakes and that is the essence of the learning curve. So, take it easy and keep going, there are so many important and better things to do in life.

Respect Others Space and Privacy
A common instance when a person takes things personally is when a person is said 'NO' to. But a 'NO' is not always a rejection. When a person says 'No' to you for anything, there could be many reasons for doing so. If you ask a friend to accompany you somewhere and he says no to you, that does not mean that he does not want to join you. It could just mean that he genuinely has no time or is in no state to come. So, respect others privacy and space and stop taking it personally.

Know What to Expect from Whom
There are times when you ask someone for something and the person refuses to grant it point blank; that's when you need to know that there is nothing you can do here. A few people are like that; inconsiderate and ruthless. Here you need to take care and know what you are expecting from whom.

Remove "I"
I, Me, Myself.. stop thinking that everything is about you. You are important, very important, BUT there are others too. Get over the ego problem and think about what others feel, mean and say. Everything said and done is not always about you. Stay unbiased! It is a state of mind where a person knows the difference between the right and the wrong. It's again about knowing your true-self and accepting it without any hesitance and being able to stand for it. When, one is in a biased state of mind, he/she will not seek the right solution to a problem because 'he does not see things as it is' but instead 'sees it the way he wants to see it'.

You Were Not Born to Please Everyone
It is so difficult fighting with those hundred things running in your own head and being able to perform any one of them. Imagine if you start bothering about hundreds of things, that hundred different people think about. You will go insane! So stop bothering about what others think, tell and expect from you and they will stop bothering you. Seriously it works (self-tested)! Do what you like and invest your time in productive things. No one knows what's better for you, than yourself.

Get Over Your Past
When a person begins to take things personally, it indicates that he doubts himself. It could be because of the inhibitions from his/her past experience. The only way to get rid of this is by accepting the past and letting it go. Your past is a part of you and not being able to accept it is like rejecting yourself. Smile at your past; like Richard Bandler said, "The best thing about the past is that, it is over!"

You know I used to do it too. I used to take things personally, get offended and hurt myself with the smallest things. Fortunately, with time I learnt that no one I know of is perfect and that I wasn't all that bad. After all, today I am writing an article on 'how not to take things personally' and trying to help someone else.

You just need to experience it once to know how strong it feels when your emotions are under your control. And once you have felt it, you will keep driving yourself to this blissful state again and again. You will, like me, manage to reach a state wherein you can take a compliment and a criticism with equal modesty.

Why We Fail When We Rely Simply On Diets

For years we have heard, "Eat less, exercise more, and you will lose weight". Sounds simple, right? If it worked... why are we still so overweight? According to an October report from the World Health Organization (WHO), excess weight has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults being either overweight or obese. More people worldwide now die from being overweight and obese than from being underweight.

Simply cutting back calories does not work for most of us. It works for some, but those are the ones who are more genetically inclined to be fit and trim anyway. We all know a few of them. They are the ones telling us to, "Eat less and exercise more". The majority of us try and fail, try and fail, try and fail.

The most common reason for failing is cravings. We can eat but still crave something we love (chocolate, ice cream, cereal, etc.). Have you ever just stood at your open refrigerator or pantry to see what you "might me in the mood for"? There are so very many foods that actually promote cravings such as sugar and other simple carbohydrates. Even many so-called "diet foods" contain ingredients that promote hunger and cravings. The experts try to tell us that a calorie is a calorie but most of us know it's not. Some foods stimulate hunger and we end up hungrier or craving more than before we ate it.

The second reason for failure is hunger. We cut back our calories and we are hungry. There is no getting around this. Our body likes to maintain equilibrium. If we eat more than it needs, it stores the excess as fat and tells us to move around a bit in order to burn more. If we eat just a little it tells us, "Stop moving, lay on the couch, watch a movie, burn less, eat more, feed me, i.e. "hunger". Hunger is our body telling us it needs energy (food).

In order to avoid hunger we cut back our calories only a "little bit" but it is not enough to actually lose significant weight. We may lose a pound or two and in frustration give up. Failed again.

We have to cut back calories enough to

make our body continually use our stored fat for fuel. In order to do this we have to eliminate the hunger and cravings. Some people go toward diet pills to take care of hunger but I don't recommend it. Too many times an "approved" diet drug faces a recall because of dangerous side-effects they discovered years after introducing it to the public.

There are food and food products available that eliminate hunger and cravings. You just have to do your homework to find them. Find them, eliminate hunger and cravings, and you will be able to stay on a low calorie diet and lose weight successfully. Finally an end to our yo-yo dieting.

Tips for Escaping Writer's Block

Most writers will experience at least some form of writer's
block in the course of their efforts. It takes different forms
for various people, as evidenced by the many expressions used to
explain it.

"I don't have any ideas."

"Everything I write sounds stupid."

"I just can't get motivated."

At the root of it, most writer's block comes from fear or at
least from uncertainty. Writing is like any other art - the
writer must create something that will go out before the public
for examination. This is a personal process, and carries with it
the risk of rejection. Any artist can understand the fear of
being mocked for his or her hard work, and it's equally
understandable that this would intimidate some people into
hesitating when the time comes to write.

Before going much further, it must be said that there is no cure
for writer's block — those who suffer it push through to the
other side with sheer willpower. The writer must exercise his or
her judgment and forge ahead. Be that as it may, there are a
number of techniques that can help rally a writer's
determination in order to bring them forward through the wall of
fear and into the realm of joyful writing.

Technique #1 - Stand on Giants' Shoulders

One of the most common instances of writer's block comes when
writing on a subject that many people have covered before. The
fear is that there is nothing new to contribute to the matter,
that anything additional would seem superfluous.

One technique, popularized in the movie Finding Forrester, is to
search out similar writings on the subject by other authors. When
a writer finds a piece they particularly like, they borrow a line
or two from the author, and try to write further material from
there. Once they hit their stride, they move on and produce an
article entirely their own.

Note that last proviso in the technique — this is not
permission to plagiarize. The original author's contribution is
simply to provide a starting point to the creative process, not
to add anything to the final article. Once the process begins,
the author must write his own work and not use anything from the
original article unless he is willing to include it as a sourced
quotation.

Technique #2 - Write in Bursts

Sometimes the psychological effects of writer's block feel like
a weight. Sitting down and writing becomes burdensome and
exhausting, and wears the writer out as surely as heavy exercise.

In these cases, it can be counterproductive to try and write
everything at once. Instead, the writer should sit down and try
to write to a certain goal, say 200 words. If she hits her goal,
she should try and keep writing. If she cannot reach it or takes
unusually long to do so, she should stop for five minutes and do
something else. Listen to music, eat a tasty snack or read
something enlightening — then try again. These repeated small
attacks on the subject will help wear it down without it seeming
quite so massive.

Technique #3 - Shut Down the Editor

An in-process version of writer's block was explained by Chris
Baty, the creator of the National Novel Writing Month
(NaNoWriMo). Baty argues that many writers sabotage their
productivity by constantly self-editing and self-criticizing as
they work, spending more time correcting what's already been put
down than putting out new copy.
