Tasmania produces no less than 14 different types of wines. Each of them is praised for their unique taste, colour and flavour.
Pinot Noir - These are the black wines of the island. They come from the specific breed of dark black Pinot Noir grapes.
Cabernet Sauvignon - The Cabernet Sauvignon grape wine denotes a special type. These are artificially cultured breed of grapes with dark blue colour. They convert into red wines in Tasmania. These red wines are world's most premium one. They are juicy, fleshy and colourful. The Cabernet Sauvignon has many other blends where the wineries try to alter the flavour and colour to offer diversification to the wine lovers.
Merlot - The Tasmanian Merlot wines are very soft, ripen quickly and come from the dark blue grapes. The important aspect of this wine is its fleshy in taste. You will not find this type of fleshy taste in other wines from dark blue grapes.
Chardonnay - The Chardonnay is yet another type of white wine from the region that comes from green-skinned grapes. With strong flavour, the Chardonnay is different from other white wines, as they do not release any bubble. Thus, they do not fall in the category of sparkler like Riesling.
Gewurztraminer - While the Gewurztraminer by name sounds much German, its origin is in France. The Gewurztraminer denotes a special group of wines as it can take the colours of both Red and White.
Riesling - The Tasmanian Riesling wines have great flavours and high level of acidity. It comes from white grapes that are not much sweet. It also belongs to the sparkler wine class.
Sauvignon Blanc - The Sauvignon Blanc is a French term for a special kind of grapes that grow naturally and without human care. Sauvignon Blanc wines are bit wild in taste. The grapes belong to indigenous class with their greenish skin. The Tasmanian one is wild yet sweeter in taste, unlike other Sauvignon Blanc.
Semillon - Semillon is well known for the best quality sweet white wines. The grape has golden color.
Pinot Gris - The Pinot Gris is an extended family of the Pinot Noir grapes. However, these are appropriate as white wines only while the Pinot Noir is for black wine.
Whilst we are talking about the wines of Tasmania and their different varieties, Tasmania has no native grapes. All grapes that are grown in Tasmania, come from different areas of the world.
