Computer Vision Syndrome – Prevention is better than cure

The growing dependency on computers has given rise to several direct and indirect health problems. One of the problems commonly faced by most people is the Computer Vision Syndrome. It is a condition of eye muscle fatigue. The usage of various types of prescription eyewear as well as non-prescription eyewear helps greatly in preventing the Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

Several reasons such as the drying up of tears in your eyes and the finding it difficult to concentrate on the letters on the computer screen (they don't have well-defined edges) may lead to CVS. If you are experiencing tired and fatigued eyes with recurring headaches and irritation of eyes or blurred vision and light sensitivity, you may be prone to Computer Vision Syndrome. You need to undergo eye-strain treatment.

Even though it might sound clichéd, it is true- "Prevention is better than cure". Treatment would mean more inconveniences, expenses and even a waste of time. So it is preferable to resort to prevention.

The best way to prevent CVS is by using prescription eyewear. The normal glasses or contact lenses you use will not be enough for protection from this eye condition. It requires special RX eyeglasses. These are designed for the wearer to work comfortably in front of a computer. The normal reading glasses cannot be used for this as the reading distance of the computer is different from normal reading.

Lighting is also an important factor for such problems. In order to deal with bright light problems, anti-reflective (AR) coating can be employed. It is much like a polarized sunglass as it prevents the glare and reflected light from reaching your eyes.

According to your power defects, you can select from monofocal, bifocal, trifocal or progressive addition lenses. All these lenses serve a specific purpose. Hence, it is better to consult an optometrist or an ophthalmologist before selecting a pair of designer prescription glasses.
