Designing a Skatepark

So you wanna design a skatepark? Skateboarding has become increasingly popular in America and even most small towns now have a skatepark. If there’s an existing skatepark nearby that needs a little restoration, the process can be relatively easy.If your neighbourhood is a bit behind the times and you’re thinking about investing in one, there are a few things to consider.
Money

Skateparks can be quite an expensive investment, usually starting from at least $25,000. You should think about where this money will be coming from, and how much you’re able to spend. Sponsorship through local businesses may be an option, or government funding. A little research will help you figure out your options.

Location

Figure out the best place to build a skatepark. Location is a very important factor in skatepark planning. You may need to get permission to build in a certain area. Landscape should also be considered – flat areas require different planning than areas which are sloped. Take measurements of the area you’d like to use, to make sure how much room you have to work with. Remember, not everyone will be happy with your decision to build a new skatepark. Listen to your community’s response on the issue, and take their comments into consideration. After all, they have to live with it as well.

Materials

Asphalt is the cheapest option for skatepark construction, but concrete is the most popular material for many reasons. Concrete is better in hot temperatures, which is good in areas such as New Orleans, where summers can get quite hot. The right construction material for ramps is also an important consideration. If you’re unsure, talk to skateboarders around your town and see what they’d prefer. Insurance requirements may also influence your decision.

Design

If you’re determined to design it yourself, due to personal preference or budget reasons, figure what elements you’d like to combine and arrange them in the area you plan to build in. Once you’re happy with your design, take it to a professional to make sure it can work. If you can find someone who’s successfully designed a skatepark in the past, you can pick up some great tips and tricks from them.
