Interesting Side Dishes - What To Serve With Chili?

Chili is a delicious comforting meal in a bowl that can truly be perfect all by itself! However, sometimes chili can use a couple sides to take it over the top, and make it a very memorable meal. At my work we have a chili cook off a couple times a year and it is a lot of fun! Each unit brings a pot of chili, and a side of some sort. The interesting part is thinking of what side item to bring, and sometimes this is the most delicious part of the meal!

When thinking of sides to go with chili, I often think about what to put on top of the chili! Things like: shredded cheddar, Fritos, diced onions and tomatoes, sour cream, cilantro and scallions come to mind. Everyone enjoys different combinations of toppings, so when serving chili it is nice to have a variety and selection to choose from. Another great idea would be to make an exotic slaw or salsa. Like a salsa with some pineapple, cilantro, and jalapeno. It is a refreshing kick and perfect for serving with corn chips and chili!

Another great idea would be to think about complimenting the chili with some sort of starch, such as a potato or corn bread. A friend of mine always likes to make twice baked potatoes to serve with this delicious meal. This is great because you can spoon a little on top of the potatoes and have a truly loaded baked potato! Corn bread, yeasty rolls and other bread items also make a lovely side. To take the chili to another level, or country I should say, think about serving it with corn tortillas and some Mexican rice.

Personally, my favorite type of chili to make is a light chicken chili. This type of chili is not to heavy and has just the perfect amount of spice to it. When serving this I like to serve it with a nice salad with a simple and tangy vinaigrette and perhaps some fruit salad alongside that. This is perfect for those who do not eat red meat and hope to have something a bit on the light side.
